Hi there! I am Makeda, I’m the founder, designer, and maker of Johari. Here is a little bit more about me:
The first pair of pants I made at the ripe age of eight lacked a crotch seam (much to my mother’s protest). One high kick and rip later I learned she was right. I have come a long way since then. It was only three-years later that I learned I could design and make clothes for a living (thanks Clueless). Fast forward through many art and sewing classes, I moved from Portland, OR to attend Massachusetts College of Art and Design. I graduated with my degree in apparel design.
I have dreamed about having my own business since I was a kid, the light went off when I got married. I knew, then, that I wanted to focus on bridal. I would launch by designing and sewing my own wedding gown and veil. I remember the excitement of putting on my veil, it meant it was time! Whether that is walking down the aisle of a giant cathedral, or two people standing together at city hall, I love the idea of taking part, in creating beauty, on such a memorable day for a couple.
Creativity is a part of my everyday life. When I am not designing, I’m getting creative in the kitchen, designing my home, or working with my hands wherever I can.
